42. Paradise Valley - The records of the State Engineer show that the three large hotels just south of Las Vegas used an average of 0.51 MOD during the year 1948. This probably does not represent over 50 per cent of the total water withdrawn by all the tourist establishments in this immediate area. An estimate of 1.0 MOD appears reasonable. It is estimated that the water consumption will increase directly as the resident population in the area. The future requirements on this basis are 2.0 MOD in 1970 and 4.0 MGD in the year 2000. A portion of ParadiBe Valley is now devoted to agriculture. The 1948 estimate for irrigation is 4.49 MOD or 5,000 acre feet per year. Based on an average gross water duty of 6 acre-feet per acre of land, not over 850 acres can be under irrigated cultivation at the present time. The Department of Agriculture soil survey of 1923 shows about 5,400 acres of land in Paradise Valley that, provided conditions of drainage and alkali accumulation are favorable, are well adapted to agriculture. An estimate of an ultimate area under cultivation of 50 per cent of this total appears reasonable. The water requirements for 2,700 acres may average 16,200 acre-feet per year or 14.5 MOD. This appears to be the practical ultimate development.
