\ M i Water District Directors Sifting Purchase of Local Water System ,, „.1™m+ediate purc,h7ase of f c facilities o f the Las Vegas .Land & W ater company as the first step m Las Vegas valley w ater d istrict’s program is being definitely explored ’M R l undertaken shortly, according to Thomas A. Campbell, chairm an of the district s board of directors. ; Suggested originally by County Commissioner H arley A. H armon as the most logical immediate move, this would set the w ater district up in business, provide operating experience and organization and perhaps some finances to m eet other Dressing' expansion problems. * B “Several mem bers of the board of directors favor this plan,” Campbell said “and we are seriously studying _ the m atter rig h t now. It is possible we will proceed with a bond election to cover this acquisition w hich, after all, is a necessary prelim inary to any arrangem ent for obtaining w ater fro m the Basic facilities.” Campbell said also the district engineers are delving fu rth er into the cost of building an independent pipe-line in from Lake M ead which would be exclusively for the use of the district. „ . “° f course, th il has always been o u r ultim ate aim,” the chairm an explained. It is entirely a m atter of financing, how ever, and th at is w hy we set it up for 1960. ,,, We are bringing our facts and figures up to date in order that we can pass on i; the feasibility of building the line imm ediately. However, our engineers tell us th at the present cost of our own line would be so m ew here betw een $12,000,000 and $15,000,000 which appears to be beyond the capacity of the district to privately finance at this tim e ” Campbell said the directors were determ ined to come up w ith an answer and that despite the setback in the Larson declaration here this week th at there m ight be no surplus in the Basic line, w ere, still confident th at a solution could and would be found. “We simply have to get Lake Mead w ater into the valley in sufficient quantities to m eet our needs,” Campbell said. “And i t ’s our job to find the answer. We haven’t given up—in fact w e’ve just started over again w ith / renew ed vigor and enthusiasm W .th the, general support of the people here, we will succeed.” :.?---
