% San P edro, E. G. TILTON, OHIEF ENGINEER Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad C ompany Rate on gravel, Las Vegas Employes' cottages, etc. Mr. J. Ross Clark, 1911. 521. Second Vice-President, Building. Dear Sir:- I Lave received from you a copy of a letter you wrote Mr. R. E. Wells respecting the rate to he charged for hauling gravel to he used in construction of employes' cottages, which rate you name as one cent a ton a mile, or about #24.00 a car from Hoya gravel pit to Las Yegas. I took this matter up some weeks ago when preparing cost estimates for the employes' cottages and other buildings at Las Yegas, and Mr. Clark verbally fixed a price of ten dollars a car, including yard switching and return of empties. Mr. Bettis was present at the interview and heard all that passed. Later, I received a letter from Mr. Clark under date of January 20th. 1911, in which he stated the rate would be #13.60 a car. Now,all my estimates were based on the ten dollar rate, and if a higher rate is charged my estimates are too low for whatever structures gravel was to be used in for concrete. I submit that this is most unfair to me, and also that the rate of ten dollars a car is ample as the loads are hauled by freights which reach the gravel pit with less than their tonnage, and in consequence the cost of hauling is probably much less than ten dollars a car
