Alpha Kappa Alpha/Theta Theta Omega of Las Vegas, Nevada Ivy Reading AKAdemy End of Year Report

Objective(s)
To implement a first through third grade reading initiative. The goal is to focus on early learning and mastery of basic reading skills in grades 1-3.
Procedures:
Year Three: January -May 2005.
The Ivy Reading AKAdemy is located at Wendell Williams Elementary School. The AKAdemy meets once a week.
The program is inclusive of a weeklong homework assignment, which involves the family.
Tutors: 8 sorors and 3 community persons +1 Coordinator --12 Adults There are 22 tutees in the program.
The program addressed these five basic reading skills: Alphabet Recognition, Sight Word Mastery, Phonics, Comprehension Skills and Recreational Reading.
Each week each child received a book of his or her own to take home to build a home library.
Mastery was evaluated by using the Sight Word Test Knowledge of 100 Words = First Grade Knowledge of 200 Words = Second Grade Knowledge of 300 Words --- Third Grade
The Pre-Sight Word Tests revealed that our tutees knew very few sight words, By the time the tutees were post-tested in December, 2005: Nineteen of our students knew 300 words
Two knew 200 words One knew 100 words.
The Reading AKAdemy Year Three was a success!!!!!
The Reading AKAdemy Summer Program was entitled Ivy Reading AKAdemv in a Bag.
The tutees received books, workbooks and supplies for them to carry out our Monday- Friday Reading Program at Home, June-August 2005
One night included a DEAR Night for the entire family to read together. Magazines were sent home for the parents to Drop Everything And Read with their children.
Budget
Theta Theta Omega provided $2,500.00 for Year Three.
In addition. Theta Theta Omega Sorors donated over $1,000.00 and over400 books as well as other supplies. Theta Theta Omega received a grantfrom the city for $750.00.00
