The Las Vegas Land and Water Company (LVL&W) was created in 1905, and was owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1947 the Nevada Legislature created the Las Vegas Valley Water District with the intent of using the State's allocated water from the Colorado River. The Union Pacific Railroad finally agreed to sell the LVL&W in 1952 and the Water District began operation in July of that year.
