Arlene Mathews Smith was born September 12, 1910 in Panaca, Nevada to David Charles Matthews and Carrie Lee. Smith was educated in Panaca and graduated from high school in Panaca in an area now known as Lincoln County. In the winter of 1927 Arlene and her entire family contracted smallpox; the family was quarantined for weeks. In 1929 Arlene started her first job working for a drug store in Pioche, Nevada.
