This was the first improvement in shaft mucking over hand mucking into the sinking bucket. A tugger hoist, remotely controlled by a miner, was mounted in each end compartment of the shaft. Miners scooped muck into the pan which was then hoisted and hooked to the long tom cage before dumping into the mine car. The sketch shows both loading and dumping operations.
