Steel Sharpening Early day steel was cruciform in shape. Sharpening the steel required heating the bit end and hammering with the dolly or die. Final shaping was done on the anvil with a small hammer. Air for the forge was supplied by a large hand bellows. Drill steel was solid, as steel mills had not yet learned to roll hollow steel.
