The Gold Hill, Nevada Silver Star #5 Masonic Lodge was founded on October 13, 1864 with Duane L. Bliss, founder and builder of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, as a charter member. As a prominent example of Freemasonry in Nevada, the lodge boasted 188 members by 1875, but as metal production declined so did the lodge, leading to its consolidation with a nearby lodge in 1919.
