Abstract

Oral history interview with Larry K. Lytle conducted by Kenneth V. Higbee on April 26, 2004 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Lytle reflects upon his 30-year career as a teacher and administrator with Nevada’s Lincoln County School District (LCSD) from the 1970s to the 2000s. He describes the process by which he became a principal, and describes his approach to fostering a safe learning environment for students and staff. He also describes how his religious beliefs shaped his approach to leadership, and how his responsibilities changed over time as he simultaneously oversaw the elementary, middle, and high school in Alamo, Nevada. He provides his opinion on schooling challenges such as standardized testing, and offers suggestions for individuals interested in pursuing school administration.

Oral history interview with William K. Moore conducted by Jana Smart and Wendy Modglin on July 20, 2001 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Moore reflects upon his more than 30-year career as a teacher and administrator in both Nebraska and Nevada. He discusses the process by which he went from being a teacher to a principal in Nebraska, and eventually became a principal in Nevada’s Clark County School District (CCSD). He discusses his experience as principal of J. T. McWilliams Elementary School, challenges that he faced as an administrator, and his involvement with the Parent Teacher Association. He also offers suggestions for individuals interested in pursuing school administration, and comments on having a school named after him.

In this interview, Dr. Glick reflects upon her career as an elementary and high school principal in New York. She discusses her transition from being an elementary school principal to being a high school principal, and the process by which she eventually became a guidance counselor for Nevada’s Clark County School District. She describes her regular responsibilities as principal, her approach to school administration, and her working relationship with teachers and parents. She also compares working in New York with working in Nevada, and discusses contemporary challenges within schools such as drugs and violence.

In this interview, Goynes reflects upon his career as a teacher and administrator in Nevada’s Clark County School District (CCSD). He discusses his experiences becoming a teacher as an African American man during the 1950s and 1960s, and his early interactions with Native American students in Arizona. He then describes the process by which he joined CCSD in the 1960s, and quickly became an administrator. He describes his regular responsibilities, his experiences with school integration, and his efforts in maintaining working relationships with students, staff, and parents. He also offers suggestions for individuals interested in pursuing school administration.

Abstract

The Frank Gagliardi Music Manuscript Collection (approximately 1964-1974) contains musical arrangements of standard Frank Sinatra songs, printed or photocopied with annotations. Each part is in its own folder, and each song is numbered. Frank Gagliardi performed as percussionist in Antonio Morelli's orchestra for the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he played for Frank Sinatra and other notable entertainers during the 1960s and 1970s.

Abstract

Ann Brewington Papers (1984-1987) consist of letters and clippings related to Nevada history. Correspondence is primarily from Anne Brewington's sister, Ida Brewington, to Brewington regarding Ida Pittman's death. This collection also contains a letter from Florence Cahlan and copies of letters sent to Cahlan about an article she had written on Ida Brewington Pittman. Also included is another article about Pittman that appeared in the December 2, 1984 Nevadan that has a few hand written notes in the margins, as do a few of the letters.

Mike Malone Papers

Abstract

The Mike Malone Papers (1979-1996) document the legislative activities of Mike Malone, a former Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer. Malone was a Nevada State Assemblyman from 1979 to 1985 and a State Senator from 1986 to 1990. The papers highlight the work of the committees Malone was on during his time in those offices, and include senate and assembly bills, campaign materials, newspaper clippings, letters from Malone to constituents, and minute books primarily from the 1983 and 1989 legislative sessions.

The Southern Nevada Historical Society Records document the management and development of the Southern Nevada Historical Society (SNHS) as well as various historical projects in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada that the society sponsored from 1948 to 1983. The records include SNHS correspondence (1951-1978), meeting minutes (1958-1983), and accounting information (1959-1980). It also contains copies of the SNHS Backtrails Newsletter, promotional material for events, membership lists, and research materials for various projects related to the history of southern Nevada and Las Vegas.
