Oral history interview with Elsa Lopez-Martinez conducted by Barbara Tabach on June 21, 2021 for Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project.

Elsa, one of the original student interviewers for the Latinx Voices project, talks about her family, her Mexican-American roots, and her experience learning Spanish and English. She discusses her education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and her work as an interviewer with Latinx Voices before her graduation. Elsa also shares what it has been like entering the workforce as an elementary school teacher during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Oral history interview with Laura Gunning conducted by Mike Martinez on March 5, 1981 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Gunning discusses her life in Las Vegas, Nevada. Gunning first talks about her family background, her church membership, education, and the minimum wage. She also talks about the Las Vegas Strip, the first businesses and markets in Las Vegas, change in climate, and family trips.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Christopher C. Hudgins conducted by Claytee D. White on May 18, 2016 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Hudgins open his interview by discussing his upbringing in Virginia, his education, and the manual labor jobs he worked as a teenager. Hudgins then describes his introduction to American folk music and moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1976. Hudgins then recalls what the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) was like in 1976 and how he became familiar with the city. Hudgins then discusses his career and scholarship while at UNLV as a chairman in the English department, and his interest in broadcasting. He then explains conflicts between the Board of Regents and the UNLV faculty, the expansion of UNLV related construction on Maryland Parkway, and his interest in becoming a dean. Hudgins describes his goals as dean of the liberal arts college, the challenges of implementing grants for liberal arts projects, and his views on college athletics. Lastly, Hudgins recalls attending a Nobel Prize ceremony as an invited guest of Harold Pinter, and his association with the City of Asylum organization.

Oral history interview with Laurents Bañuelos-Benitez conducted by Rodrigo Vazquez and Barbara Tabach on June 16, 2021 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Laurents is a Las Vegas native, graduate of Clark High School, and son of Mexican and Salvadoran immigrants. He is currently an English teacher at Rancho High School and was a former student worker on the Latinx Voices project.

Oral history interview with educator Beula Jane Adams (b. 1902) conducted by Maureen Conner on May 11, 1977 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Born in Smithfield, Nebraska, Adams relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1932. During the interview Adams explores and highlights the role of education in relation to the social development of Nevada. Adams discusses presidential visits, early above ground atomic tests, and her involvement in local politics.

Abstract

University of Nevada, Las Vegas Division of Student Affairs Records (1959-2024) contains reports on student demographics and usage statistics of the Student Services program, as well as inter-departmental correspondence that date between 1958 and 1979. The collection also contains correspondence with external departments, committees, and professors. The majority of the correspondence is dated between 1970 and 1977 and is primarily from Dr. Robert E. Glennen, UNLV's Vice President for Educational Services at the time. The collection also contains student handbooks, codes of conduct, Greek Life information, Moyer Student Union newsletters and brochures, and other student-related material.
