Calvin Shields oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Calvin Shields conducted by Claytee D. White on May 07, 2009 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Shields begins by discussing his upbringing in Florida and his early interest in playing the trumpet before being drafted into the United States Army during World War II, where he learned how to play the drums in a military orchestra. Shields describes his career as a musician following his military service, playing as a drummer for singers such as Sammy Davis Jr. and Billy Williams and in various club and casino orchestras in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Hermi and John Hiatt conducted by Jeff van Ee on April 02, 2010, April 03, 2010, and April 25, 2010 as part of the UNLV University Libraries Oral History Collection. In these interviews, Hermi and John Hiatt discuss their involvement in shaping the Red Rock Audubon Society, cataloging native plants, and the national Christmas Bird Count event. They later describe mapping around Southern Nevada, establishing boundaries for the sale of public lands, and the groundwater system under the Las Vegas, Nevada valley.

Oral history interview with Jerry Roth conducted by Claytee D. White on June 29, 2010 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Roth begins by describing his early life and education, then explains how he began his later career in commercial real estate. He details his work as a commercial realtor, preparing lots for shopping centers and grocery stores in California and later in Las Vegas, Nevada. Roth then discusses his work as a boxing judge, judging multiple title fights in Las Vegas and around the world.

Abstract

The Byrd Wall Sawyer Photograph Collection contains color photographic slides depicting Byrd Wall Sawyer’s home, the Carson House, in Carson City, Nevada; towns and cities; and landscapes throughout Nevada between approximately 1950 to 1970. Nevada towns and cities primarily depicted include Belmont, Manhattan, Reno, and Dixie. Nevada landscapes include Carson River, Carson Mountains, Olinghouse Canyon, Washoe Lake, King’s Canyon, Lake Winnemucca, Washoe Valley, and Lake Tahoe.

Abstract

The Dow Metals, Incorporated Photograph Collection on Basic Magnesium, Incorporated (approximately 1940 to 1990) contains black-and-white photographic prints, reproduction prints, and negatives depicting scenes at the Basic Magnesium, Inc. (BMI) plant in Henderson, Nevada. Images also include Basic townsite homes, buildings, and residents; BMI employees; and interior and aerial views of the plant. Also included are images from Pittman, Nevada of row houses, tent houses, a recreation center, and dining and entertainment establishments.

Blanche Zucker-Bozarth Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Blanche Zucker-Bozarth Photograph Collection contains black-and-white and color photographic prints, negatives, and slides of Blanche Zucker-Bozarth between approximately 1980 and 2000. These images depict Zucker-Bozarth attending University Library Society gatherings at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), community fundraisers and events, and award ceremonies. During University Library Society gatherings, Zucker-Bozarth is seen with UNLV Libraries and campus-level administrative faculty and associates.

Lloyd Gill Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Lloyd Gill Photograph Collection (1979) consists of reproduction black-and-white photographic prints and negatives of images Gill took in Las Vegas, Nevada from approximately 1960 to 1969. The images depict black residents' experiences at Las Vegas hotels, casinos, and nightclubs in the predominantly black West Las Vegas. Locations include the Carver House Hotel and Casino, the El Rio Club, Town Tavern, the Cove Hotel, and the Brown Derby Club.
