James H. Down Jr. Photograph Collection

Abstract

The James H. Down Jr. Photograph Collection (approximately 1915-1940) consists of black-and-white photographic prints and negatives, as well as color photographic slides and postcards. The images depict scenes in and around Las Vegas and Goodsprings, Nevada. Also included are Glenn Davis' photographs of the Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam), Black Canyon, the Colorado River, and Lake Mead. Most of the images portray the construction phases of the Hoover Dam.

United States National Park Service Photograph Collection

Abstract

The United States National Park Service Photograph Collection is comprised of black-and-white photographic prints and negatives from approximately 1925 to 1950. Images include construction and remediation projects in Boulder City, Nevada; including Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, and the surrounding recreation area. Also included are images of the Lost City Museum in Overton, Nevada and Fort Churchill in Lyon County, Nevada; construction of tourist facilities at the Valley of Fire in southern Nevada; and landscapes taken along the Colorado River in Arizona and Utah.

Castaways Hotel and Casino Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Castaways Hotel and Casino Photograph Collection, approximately 1963 to 1987, consists of black-and-white and color photographic prints and negatives. Images depict the exterior of the entrance to the property, the mega-pylon sign, the pool area, and the “Gateway to Luck” replica temple in the courtyard area. The interior images depict various hotel rooms and suites, a couple dining, and a performance by Rusty Isabel, an entertainer in the Kon Tiki Lounge inside the property.

Dennis Lee Askew oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Denis Lee Askew conducted by Su Kim Chung on August 28, 2015 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Askew discusses Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1950s and 1960s and his experiences working as a busboy at the Sands Hotel in the late 1960s. He discusses seeing shows and recalls watching the Copa Girls show. Later, Askew describes his band, The Universe, and talks about getting a radio show where he discusses the music scene in Las Vegas.

Susan P. Slade oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Susan P. Slade conducted by Claytee D. White on July 31, 2015 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Slade discusses attending Las Vegas High School in Las Vegas, Nevada and being in the Rhythmettes, the school's female dance group. Slade describes the team's operation and culture, and the different places they performed in Nevada and around the country. She talks about life in Las Vegas, the city's growth, and the communities in which she has lived throughout Las Vegas.

Donna L. Miller oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Donna L. Miller conducted by Claytee D. White on July 15, 2015 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Miller begins by describing her early upbringing on her family's potato farm in Oregon before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada. She discusses attending Las Vegas High School, joining the Rhythmettes, the school's female dance group, and her experiences in the Rhythmettes, including where she performed and the team's coach, Evelyn Stuckey. Miller also briefly discusses working as a secretary at the Sahara Hotel and Casino and real estate in Las Vegas.
