It also includes Roske's research and manuscripts on Nevada, California, and the United States Civil War, as well as student

papers. Ralph Roske was a professor of history at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

Abstract

Oral history interview with Nellie Bunch conducted by Robin Ducharme on November 20, 1975 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Bunch first talks about her settlement into the Whitney Ranch area of Henderson, Nevada, and her knowledge about the building of Hoover (Boulder) Dam. She also talks about the early utilization of water resources from Lake Mead, early sources of power, and the early use of evaporative coolers. Bunch also speaks about her experience as a postmaster and later discusses telephone technology and the early churches of Las Vegas, Nevada. Digital audio and transcript available.

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Collection of Gaming Artifacts and Ephemera (approximately 1863-2012) is comprised of Las Vegas, Nevada casino gaming artifacts; games such as Pai Gow, Las Vegas themed board games, Piquet, and punchboards; and ephemera items about gaming. The collection contains postcards and newspaper clippings advertising for casinos in Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, the Bahamas, France, and California. The collection also contains information on gaming legislation in Europe and the United States, writings on gambling systems, gaming tickets, and various pamphlets on how to play different games such as roulette and baccarat, as well as several decks of souvenir playing cards, dice, and buttons.

The Peggy Hyde Phillips Papers (1929-1998) document the lives of Peggy Hyde Phillips, her first husband Charles, and her son Michael. The collection also includes a near-complete run of issues from February 1, 1963 through May 8, 1964 of the Paradise Press weekly newspaper from Paradise, an unincorporated township in Clark County, Nevada.

The Christie Young Papers are comprised of Young's personal papers, journals, and photographs between 1982 and 2011. The journals document Young's arrival to Las Vegas, Nevada and her involvement in several nascent Las Vegas lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) organizations from 1982 to 1985, such as UNLV's Lesbian and Gay Academic Union (LGAU). The collection includes materials related to her life in San Diego, California from 1985 to 1995 and typed transcripts of all journal entries that relate to the Las Vegas LGBTQ community. The collection also includes photographic slides and prints documenting Young's involvement with LGAU and events in the Las Vegas LGBTQ community.
